Dictation without a subscription

A one-time app license can remove the recurring software fee. It does not automatically remove every usage cost. The main question is where transcription happens.

Local transcription

A model on your computer uses your hardware to turn speech into text. There is no cloud transcription bill. You need enough storage for the model and a computer that processes it at a speed you find useful.

Cloud transcription with your own key

You pay the app vendor for the software and the provider for cloud usage. This separates the two costs, but you are responsible for the provider account, its key, and its usage limits. AI text cleanup may add a separate model charge.

What to compare before buying

• Updates: whether future versions are included.
• Compatibility: your operating system, microphone, and target apps.
• Setup: model downloads, permissions, or provider keys.
• Privacy: where both audio and text are processed.
• Refunds: how long you have to evaluate the app on your own setup.
